What makes our residency special?

Our residents

Meet our current residents and alumni — a diverse and accomplished group of individuals who excel in clinical care, research and education. Many of our graduates hold faculty positions at top medical schools or practice privately across the country.

We aim to recruit residents who are not only skilled but also compassionate clinicians. We welcome applicants from the U.S. and abroad, including those interested in academic medicine, basic science and clinical careers in both academic and community settings.

Our faculty

The Department of Neurology includes approximately 170 faculty members, many of whom are internationally recognized leaders in their subspecialties.

A standout feature of our program is the general neurology section — a team of exceptional clinicians, including those with successful private practices, who contribute their expertise to help residents become well-rounded neurologists.

Our training program

We offer exceptional clinical training across all years of residency:

  • Intern & PGY-2 Years: Strong foundation in managing neurological disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • PGY-3 & PGY-4 Years: Residents gain autonomy, build leadership skills, and lead consultation and inpatient teams.

Residents have 11 months of electives during PGY-3 and PGY-4 to tailor their training. Elective options include:

  • Clinical or translational research
  • Neurology subspecialties
  • General neurology
  • Medical education
  • Global neurology

Our institutions

Our program is anchored by two world-class institutions:

  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital: Consistently ranked among the top U.S. hospitals, especially in neuroscience.
  • WashU Medicine: A premier research university with vast resources and expertise in neuroscience. For over 20 years, we’ve ranked in the top five institutions for NIH research support.
