Historically, reactive astrocytes and neuroinflammation were considered secondary effects of neuronal cell death in neurodegenerative diseases. However, recent research has revealed that these components play a central role in neurological disorders once thought to affect only neurons.
Research focus
Our goal is to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate reactive astrocytes and their neurotoxic effects in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease. To achieve this, we use a combination of:
- Biochemistry
- Molecular biology
- Cellular models of inflammation
- Mouse models of neurodegeneration
Therapeutic development
We are also working to develop novel therapies that target these pathways to reduce neuroinflammation, with the aim of providing new treatment options for patients affected by these conditions.
